Mochi-tsuki (making rice cake)

Festival

Mochi-tsuki is a making rice cakes. In Japan many people love eating mochi. Especially in winter because mochi makes our body hot. Today I joined a local festival, made rice cakes as a member of the group.

When we make mochi, we use a big bowl made with stone or wood. we put steamed glutinous rice with a mallet. Bumping the mallet into steamed glutinous rice many times, over 100 times, then rice turn into rice cakes. we tear the big rice cakes to pieces, seasoning with sweet soy sauce or soybean flour. So tasty.

Nowadays making mochi in this style is not popular because it takes much time and works for preparing, there are many easier cooking machine for making mochi. But the mochi made in this style is tastier than machine made mochi. I thought joining this event was so nice for my family.
